Along with Sea Lions, fur seals belong to the eared seal family, or otariid. They differ from true seals (phocidae), in having external ears and by propelling The main colonies of seals and sea lions on Kangaroo Island are at Cape Gautheaume and Cape de Couedic, with other smaller colonies dotted around the island. The main colony of Australian Sea Lions on Kangaroo Island is at Seal Bay with the largest colony being on the Pages Islands 8km East of Kangaroo Island. A number of smaller colonies can be found on the North coast of the island. New Zealand fur seals feed mainly on squid, octopus and schooling fish. They range over a vast area of the Sea Lions often lie together in groups to help conserve body heat, they respond positively to touch stimulus called (thigmoatic), their whiskers are extremely sensitive which are used for feeding activities. Sea Lions feed mainly on scale fish, squid, octopus and crustaceans. They sleep both on land and in the water, while resting in the water the Sea Lions rest with their nostrills at the surface and body angled downwards. This is called bottleing.
